RE: water leak - 1973 Winnebago Indian D-22 - in fresh tank

My Mom & Dad had a D-22. If I remeber correctly, the water tanks are behind and under the sink. My guess is the piping/fitting has cracked due to poor winterizing. I don't think the leak is from a tank; probably from a pipe/fitting. I'd check the piping/fittings from the pump to the water heater and the kitchen sink. Just a thought.

RE: Suicidal cabinet contents.

I took a different approach. Installed a screw-eye on the inside frame on tne knob side of the cabinet near the bottom/top near the knob. Attached a 10" bungee cord to the screw-eye and pulled the cord under/over the door and looped over the knob. Good for travelling and disappears when stationary. Cost about $3 for parts from HomeDepot or Lowes. Just another alternative.

RE: Ford "53" mileage survey.

2008 Challenger, 3 slides, 6.8L, 5spd towing 2007 Cobalt: on a 200 mile trip - outbound got 7.6 mpg, return about 8.8 mpg. Difference was due to using Tow/Haul mode of transission operation on the return leg.

RE: please help, problem with starter

Check the engine (starter) chassis ground connections - one at the engine and the one that connects to the chassis. In my 1990, I could see the braided strap had turned green but I could not get to the connections. Added an additional ground from a starter mounting bolt to a different chassis location. Problem solved and the engine (gas) seems to run better.

RE: What does it cost to get a car ready to tow

Recently completed outfitting a Cobalt for towing with baseplate, tow bar, wiring, brake buddy, and miscellaneous other parts for $1442. Did all the work myself except for the baseplate installation @ $220. I had estimated $1500 for the whole deal. I had the baseplate installed professionally since I wasn't sure if I could get the body and trim parts back together and have it look OK.

RE: Why did you purchase a gas Class A?

With the cost of diesel fuel, the new engine control technology and reduction in maintenance of a gasser, and an expected travel itinerary of 15000 miles/year, the increased initial cost of a diesel engine could not be justified. I can go a long distance on the savings of the initial cost.

RE: a/c wont work on shore power?

I'd look for a transfer switch that controls power to the A/C and Microwave. My Coachmen such a switch. It was near the distribution panel near the floor.

RE: Seeking Help with Purchase Decision

Am in the process of purchasing a new Challenger. This will be my fourth unit. Previously I bought older, used units with low mileage, but I had to figure out what the previous owner(s) did to the unit - just like a mystery. As my hobby, fixing the units just the way we wanted them was fun. One of the best times I remember was changing a starter in an Autozone parking lot just to get home. Me and DW laying under the unit laughing our butts off. Now, we're prepping to go full-timing and I decided to buy new. With the new unit, I think I am purchasing some insurance against the potential for failures at least for a while - no mysteries either, may be not a much fun, but sure less headaches and the creature comforts...

RE: Changing a MH Flat Tire

Been there, done that. Some suggestions: Break loose each lug nut one at a time, lube with never seize, then re-tighten with the impact wrench you have. 450# should be good for your wheels. If you have any problems, you'll find them at home rather than on the road. I always carry a cheater bar and socket besides the impact wrench, just in case. I have emergencg road service, but sometimes you need to help yourself.

RE: Remedy for slow filling gas tank?

I also believe it is a venting problem. As for the hose in hose trick, on the end that is inserted into the tank, get a cork or small rubber ball, like for playing jacks, drill it out to the size of the tubing being used for venting, insert the hose and secure the hose in the float. Then insert the hose.

RE: Odd electrical problem

Check to see if the recepatcle in the garage is not GFCI protected from in the house. The inductive kick when securing the A/C may have tripped the GFCI.

RE: If you lost your mate would you....

Unfortunately I have experienced the lost of my spouse after 39 years and 4 MHs so I know how gardening gurl fells/felt. We had just purchased a new to us unit when she unexpectly passed. It took a full year and a half just to go back into to the coach; it was our life to be. After several years, I have met a new soulmate who never had been RVing but aways wanted to do so. Her husband too had passed. We're awaiting the delivery of a new coach inorder to start fulltiming or 3/4 timing in August. I've been fortunate to find this lady to share this passion with. See you guys out on the road.

RE: Toad accidents - Break aways - I don't understant!

I too have been reading all the threads concerning towing safety. Maybe what I am writing here is obvious, but I'm voicing my thoughts anyway. There is always risk when towing ANYTHING. The aim should be to eliminate or minimize the risk. Don't tow eliminates the risk. If towing, there are five general areas that can fail in a towing system - receiver, hitch pins, hitch-ball-towbar or integral hitch-tow bar assembly, towbar pins, and base plate than can impact the over-all risk. The receivers are typically welded to frame of the MH (if bolted, the bolts should be tack-welded); this item is robust, as-is a properly installed base plate. Since these two items have the least risk of failure in the system, therefore the safety chains/cables should/could attach to these points for the least impact on safety or to directly to the frames of the MH and the Toad. I know I'm going to get some flak and that failures do occur (e.g., the baseplate/frame failure in the Explorer/Expedition, etc.) but the over-all risk is highest in the man-machine interfaces - the other three areas of the system described. Proper maintenance and installation care reduces the risks here. If installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, the risk is minimized. Deviations from the engineered designed increase risk. After all of this, I can't find follow-up information on the I-65 accident near Cullum, Al on May 5. Anybody outthere know anymore? It would be interesting to know what failed. Knowing what really happened would be benefical to all so that we may all learn from this terrible event. Was the failure a result of installation or maintenance error or was a forgein influence applied (another vehicle) to cause the event? I don't want to rely on dumb luck for protection - that's just dumb not luck - you make your own luck.

RE: Would you consider buying a new Class A today?

We're awaiting our new Daybreak 3575. We ordered new to get what we wanted - less compromises than buying off-the-lot or used. Our intent is to go fulltiming or at least 3/4 timing. We're keeping the stick built more for the children and grandkids, also as a safety valve. Even though fuel prices are high, we plan to hop-scotch across the country, snowbirding in the winter months. After reviewing the costs of having a second home or renting in the winter, the portablility of the domicile was more appealing. There just isn't one place we want to be, at least for now. Been camping/RVing since the early 70's and aren't going to stop now. Fuel prices were an issue then and we survived and kept increasing or RV lifestyle - gone from tents to TT to a '78 Brave to an '84 Cruise Aire to a '91 Catalina now to the Daybreak. In the immortal words of Alfred E. Neuman, "What, me worry?"

RE: REAL WORLD RV gas/v/diesel MPG is ????

I'm almost into my fourth MH. I've maitained pretty good records over the years. My '78 Brave (440-carb) averaged 6.3 mpg over 8 years and 59000 miles; the 1984 Cruise Aire II (454-injected) averaged 7.4 over 3 years and 27000 miles; and the 1991 Catalina (460-injected) averaged 8.3 over 2 years and 8000 miles. I'm expecting 8-8.5 from the 2008 Daybreak (6.8L) we're awaiting. I think I'm pretty realistic in the projection. I typically drive at 62-65 mph. I'll add a new wrinkle when I tow for the first. Expect to here more on this subject after I get some miles under the belt.

RE: Replacing Steering Stabilizer Bar F53 Chassis

On my 1991 F53, had a Banks steering stabiler (hydrualic unit) that did not affect the low speed turning at all; added air bags to the rear but kept oem shocks; added Michlein to the front and used Firestones for the rears; weighted all four corners & rebalanced left to right, then adjusted bag pressure and tire pressures for optimum ride. I would check the power steering unit and hydro-boost system. The PS unit is large to supply the HB and would really be affected by low fluid levels. Replaced both hoses due some minor leakage, that fixed the steering problem. Had to have the hoses custom made since the coach was an older model.

RE: Towbar Help

Bumpyroad believes the old style tow bars are junk. Can't agree with this statement at all. Most TT use this configuration. The "v" bars were used successfully for decades. I just purchased a new demco Kwik-Tow. I guess that now everything that works well and is of a proven design but not modern is junk. By that standard, I'm old, therefore junk, but that's just, like the statement, is BS.

RE: I-84 Hartford to Scranton

This is pretty easy drive. Nice scenary. Can get congested near Waterbury & Hartford CT during commuter time. The transition from I-81 to I-84 in Scranton needs to be reviewed before going there. There are a series of lane changes and road signs for I-81, I-84, & I-380. Looks simple, but nothing is very simple at 65 MPH. Your co-pilot should be heads up in this area. Haven't used the Magellan there, be it may ease the trip.

RE: Brake Buddy~Bought One Lately?

Just bought a new classic system. After reading all threads going around, I call the factory. The technican stated the problem is actually a frequency overlap problem. Sounds similar to the 2.4GHz phone interferring with other wireless devices like wireless modems. He provided some helpful advice like mounting the reciever close to a window away from the wireless rear view camera, etc. Decided then and there to install a fifth wire from the Toad brake circuit with a dash light on the MH. Found a small red LED 50 mcd at RS for under $2. For this application, a wire is much more reliable; I don't want to rely on something so iffy for something so important. It's to bad that the FCC provides such a narrow bandwidth.

RE: Smart Car...not too smart for a car...maybe a toad

Thought about the smartcar as a toad; eliminated it because of the transmission; narrowed selection to a Saturn or Cobalt because of the transmission issue; found a nice red Cobalt LT coupe; awaiting the baseplate to complete conversion.
